Hello you, Adreanna here for this week’s dispatch of The Laundry —
I’ve been working on an essay this week that never fully materialized. I knew what I wanted to say, chased the idea up to the rafters, and watched it dissolve into space. I scratched on the walls for a while, hoping to catch sight of enough of this idea that I could coax it back out and convince it to take shape. But no. Some ideas remain fragments and it takes more time to piece them together into a discernible form than we’re able to offer.
When Lodro came into my office yesterday afternoon to ask how The Laundry was coming along for today, I replied that my eyeballs were bleeding, which is a really good indicator that it’s time to step away from the computer screen and throw it into the woods. Let the Earth take my laptop. Let it be buried by moss.
The truth is that I’ve been distracted this week — by Ruby whimpering and pawing at the molars cutting through her swollen gums. By the apprehension of a second hurricane…
